Herons belong to a large group of birds know as wading birds.  They hunt in shallow water where small fish, crustaceans, and amphibians are their main diet.  Their necks are adapted for quick forward strikes at their prey.  Their food is swallowed whole.

On land Great Blue Heons eat large insects.  In winter, they often supplement their diets with small rodents.

When hunting, they move slowly and deliberately, often standing motionless for long periods of time.
